Brett Favre Retires

Brett FavreWe love you Brett and DeannaFavre Snowball

As I sit here and listen to Brett’s Retirement press conference, I feel the need to express my feelings on the matter. I am a fan, and as such I will miss Brett Favre the football player. And as a football fan I can rattle off all the stats. Career leader in Passing TDs, Wins, yards, completions, consecutive starts, etc…. Did you know that during the Favre era the Packers are the winningest organization in the NFL? Did you know that Brett has more passing yards, touchdowns, attempts, and completions at the Chicago Bears home field than any QB in Bears history. Yes I admit, I will miss him on the field, but that is not what I will miss most.

I will miss Brett, Deanna and their family. I did not actually know them personally, but every fan in Green Bay feels like they knew them personally. Deanna said it best in her little video before a Monday night game in Brett’s last year. She said…”my Brett, our Favre…” She just had one thing wrong. She should have said “our Favres”. Because while we do not know them personally, we do know them and we do love them.

We supported them when Brett was overcoming his addictions. We cried when they lost family members. We offered our prayers and support when Deanna was diagnosed with breast cancer, and we celebrated when our very own first lady beat that cancer.

Brett was more than a football player, and he was more than a Green Bay Packer. He was neighor, a father, a friend, and a hero. The Favre family was a family that Green Bay residents could relate to. They were people we could be proud of, and look up to. And while they are not gone, Favre’s retirement brings a sense of finality to a career and a relationship that I have held close to my heart for close to 20 years. I will never stop thinking of them. I will miss them.

Someday when I am old and retired I might make the trip to Kiln Mississippi and see the hometown that Brett grew up in. I will eat at a restaurant that Brett may have eaten at. Maybe I will run into a member of the family that I have grown to love and respect over the last 17 years. And maybe, just maybe, I will have the opportunity to shake their hand and say “Thank You.”
